The 1959 Indy 500 is remembered as one of the greatest races in Indianapolis 500 history and if you were lucky enough to have been there you could probably tell us all about it. Ward qualified in 6th place but he was confident enough to say before the race that he would turn down a guarantee of 2nd place finish and money because he was so sure he would win with the excellent car that AJ Watson had built for him. The race came down to a trophy-dash finish between Ward and Jim Rathmann, in another Watson roadster. Ward won and was on the way to establishing himself as one of the great Indy champions.
