Lloyd Ruby joined Dan Gurney, Joe Leonard, and Jerry Grant on the All American Racers team for the 1966 Indianapolis 500. Ruby qualified in the 5th starting position. On the 35th lap Ruby passed Parnelli Jones for 2nd place, behind leader Jim Clark. Ruby assumed the lead after Clark spun on Lap 64, and they traded the lead during pit stops. Ruby had a 50-second lead on second place when he was black flagged on the 147th lap with a smoking engine. His crew attempted to fix the leak, and he struggled to Lap 170. Ruby finished the race in 11th place.
